Mary Ann has touched on this ancient communication way, but I found this website that shows a lot of things, one of them being petroglyphs. The site also gives the whole alphabet in different languages that used petroglyphs. The signs are mostly animals and humans, which people would be familiar with.

Monica, this is great and cool to be able to see how people communicated with symbols back in early times. the past is what built what we have today and continues to improve. this also gives an example on how we use to use our minds to think up different ways to talk to one another. its a great find and give people a look at what the past has done to improve life today
